Story
The storyline of Wolfenstein picks up where the events of Return to Castle Wolfenstein left off. You play B.J. Blazkowicz, a highly decorated member of the Office of Secret Actions (OSA). You are sent on a special mission into the heart of the Third Reich to investigate evidence of the Nazi's possession of a new and mysterious power. But while behind enemy lines, you discover they have done much more than develop a new weapon. The Nazis are attempting to harness the supernatural power of an enormous energy source called 'Black Sun' which resides in a parallel dimension called 'The Veil.' Their goal is to use what they find to create supernatural weapons and soldiers of war-ending magnitude. Yours is to stop that from happening by any mean necessary.

Gameplay
Even though the game obviously features loads of Nazi enemies, Wolfenstein is not so much a World War II game, as a game centered around "dark science" and "Supernatural Science fiction." In it players move between the the parallel dimension of the Veil and that of our own as they command an enormous arsenal of conventional weapons or unleash the Nazi's own dark powers and perverted science against them with supernatural weapons and Veil-enhanced firepower.

One of the major strengths of Wolfenstein is that it allows you to choose the way you want to play. Although as in previous games in the series B.J. is a one man wrecking crew, he also works with a local resistance group. This means that players have the choice to follow the standard missions as they are revealed, take on requests from the resistance to explore the gameplay area and investigate the Nazi experiments, or to tackle the whole endeavor in multiplayer mode.

Veil Power
A huge part of Wolfenstein's sci-fi identification comes via gameplay that relies on the accumulation and use of a number of 'Veil Powers'. These powers though supernatural in origin, are used in large part by B.J. to magnify the effectiveness of his conventional weaponry and tactics. A sampling of these powers include: 'Mire,' which allows you to slow down time around B.J. so that he can take out enemies and obstructions such as machine gun nests, without the risk of taking severe damage; 'Veil Sight,' a sort of supernatural night vision that helps you see enemies in the dark; and 'Veil Shield,' which absorbs bullet fire and can be used as a battering ram in some circumstances. As with all the weapons in the game, all Veil Powers can be upgraded and indeed must be in some cases to proceed through the game.

A notable caveat that comes along with the mastery of Veil Powers is that they do not necessarily guarantee overall success. As the game proceeds, the Nazis become aware of B.J. and his understanding and use of these powers and in response distribute 'Veil Inhibitors,' devices that negate the use of these Veil-powered abilities within range of them. This opens up a puzzle-solving aspect within Wolfenstein that require players to explore the environments around them to find the inhibitors and destroy them in order to proceed.

I don't play multiplayer very often, mostly the single player. At first the graphics were not impressive, but as you play the game and start to enter and exit "The Veil", I was starting to feel more comfortable with the graphics. The missions and bad guys are excellent. The AI is also good. The nazis don't just stand there and wait to be shot they will move around and hide behind things. And the supernatural things you have to fight are crazy. These nazi women from hell start to come out of nowhere and kick you butt! They know when you are reloading also and will try and storm you.
The sound quality of the explosions and supernatural happenings are outstanding! I have a yamaha receiver with klipsch speakers throughout my living room, and the first time a grenade exploded close to me, I was amazed.
The game really doesn't seem that difficult until you put the setting on hard (bring them on).
I loved the original wolfenstein and return to castle wolfenstein, so if you enjoyed these 2 games then you will enjoy this one.
Wolfenstein is not about having the very best graphics or best sound, even though it has very good graphics and excellent sound, it is about kicking the crap out of germans! Having sueprnatural things happen to you that are the result of nazi engineering, which makes you want to kick the crap our of more germans!
I will play this game many, many times just like I have resistance fall of man, and resistance 2.
And you can carry every weapon you pick up. Not realistic, but who cares, its fun!
There's nothing like killing a few Nazis...

Reviewer: DanD,
I grew up with "Wolfenstein;" I remember playing the demo for the original over and over as a kid, wishing my parents would splurge and buy the actual game. Then, a few years ago, I picked up the PC version of "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" at a garage sale; I hadn't played video games much in the years between (just a select few PC games; I haven't owned a game system since Super NES back in grade school), but I knew I had to try "Return." I bought it and was blown away by the graphics and sheer fun.

So, when I recently bought a PS3 to help cure my boredom (God forbid I should do something productive instead), I knew I had to pick up the latest incarnation of "Wolfenstein," aptly titled "Wolfenstein." I was, yet again, blown away. Now, I know these aren't the most fantastic graphics out there; I also bought "Batman: Arkam Asylum," and those graphics blow "Wolfenstein" out of the water. But to discredit "Wolfenstein" for sub-par graphics in today's age of "seen it all played it all" is just splitting hairs. The graphics are good; the graphics are damned good. Playability is fairly easy, though I kept throwing grenades when I wanted to look through my gun sights (my bad); like I said, I haven't used a game controller since Super NES over a decade ago, and I took to it like a fish to water (albeit bullet-filled water).

But you're probably already a gamer of sorts, so let's get to the game itself: The story is so-so. Not bad, could be better. Several levels remind me of "Return" quite a bit (a dig site, some of the house layouts), and the enemy AI isn't all that great. Also, the game ends fairly quickly--I did not know I was playing the final boss until the credits rolled after I beat him.

Still, I highly recommend "Wolfenstein" for anyone who grew up with the game, or anyone who just enjoys a nice, supernatural-fueled first-person shooter. The graphics are good for the genre, and the Veil is a nice additional touch here; it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread, and God knows I'd trade it for a pair of .45 pistols and a Tommy gun, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. Take it for what it is: a thrill ride full of Nazis, beasties, and a suspenseful fight on a zeppelin. Yes, a zeppelin.
Addicted to Wolfenstein!

WOW!!!!!!

Can't get enough of this game, can't put it down for long, only to sleep and go to work and then when back home it's time to crank it up!

5 STARS for this one, I played the very 1st Wolfenstein and I loved that, now this new and I am speechless!

Waiting for a newer version of DOOM, and maybe you can use some of the characters from the movie to help out the game!

Great Graphics, Sound, Animation, worth the money spent on this!
Who cares about multiplayer

Even though this maybe isn't what people expected, it's still a great game. The graphics are great and the whole new veil/mire-stuff is also cool. A medallion that can make time go slower for you, empower your weapons and protect you. Many cool weapons as well. Unlike Return to CW, where you continously came to new locations all the time and never visited the same place twice, in this game you are mostly in the same town all the time and you'll travel back and forth to the same places many times, and it actually works quite well. Great game*****
Great FPS action

Good game. If you like FPS games and have slow internet access, this is a great game because the single player game is very long. You don't have to play multiplayer (which I hear is not good on this game anyway) to get a lot of gameplay.

Not a lot of NPC's following you around, getting in the way. Most of the game is just you against the bad guys. Upgrading the weapons is cool, and the medallion powers are fun too. Goo

Is it just me, or is this game kinda easy? I usually leave my games on the default, medium hardness level and that is plenty hard for me. I restarted the game twice, cranking up the difficulty level each time to make it more challenging. Now I am on the hardest setting and it is about right. I do die a lot, but it is a good level of challenge. The only difference I can see is that the harder you set it the less damage you can take at one time before dying.

The enemy AI is poor, I think the real German army would be much harder to outsmart. All the German enemies talk with a catty, effeminate German accent. In this game, Nazies talk like Siegfried and Roy. Go figure.

Have fun.
