Eliminating Bow Noise and Vibration

The summer months are a great time to get your bow out and make sure it is ready for the fall. Most bowhunters shoot their bows in the summer but shooting isn’t the only thing that needs to be done before fall.

I’m sure you have been in the situation: you come to full draw and let an arrow fly at a deer. You watch in disbelief as the buck or doe jumps the string and disappears into the woods. There was probably a time when you didn’t even get your bow to full draw because the deer you were aiming at heard the familiar noise of an arrow sliding across your arrow rest. The good news: these problems can be solved!

Regardless if you have a bow that is fresh out of the box or one that is five years old, if you haven’t added noise and vibration dampening devices to your bow; you could eventually encounter one of these scenarios. Eliminating vibration causes your bow to shoot smoother, helping you shoot better. Nobody likes bows that have a lot of hand shock because it feels like you are getting bit by a dog after each shot. A quiet, shock-free bow is a better-shooting, more accurate bow.

Most bows on the market come with a few vibration dampening devices on them. Most Mathews bows come with harmonic dampers that greatly reduce bow vibration. Over time, all bows begin to make noise and vibrate a little. Eliminating most of the noise and the majority of the vibration from any bow is fairly straightforward. It simply requires a little time. Below are some quick and easy steps you can take to eliminate bow noise and vibration.

ELIMINATING LIMB VIBRATION

The quickest and easiest method to reduce vibration in bow limbs is adding small limbsavers to your bow limbs. These small rubber devices help eliminate vibration and noise. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes. They can be applied to limbs, sights, quivers, and other bow accessories that clang and vibrate during a shot. Limbsavers are great because they can be applied to any bow quickly and easily. Remember to make sure the area you are applying them to is clean before you stick them on. This will only take a few seconds. There are other rubber dampening devices in addition to Limbsaver on the market that perform similarly.

NOISY BOW STRINGS

A bow string produces large amounts of noise and vibration during (and after) each shot. By having a bow shop apply string leeches or cat whiskers to your bow string, you can eliminate this problem. They are fairly inexpensive and can make a world of difference. String leeches and other devices that are attached to bow strings can reduce the overall speed of arrows. Although you may lose a foot per second by adding string leeches to your bow string, the amount of noise they eliminate is worth the trade off.

Many bow companies now makes bows that come with some sort of string suppressor on them right from the factory. The suppressors greatly reduce string noise and vibration. If your bow doesn’t come with a string suppressor consider purchasing a aftermarket one like a String Tamer from Norway Industries.

STABILIZERS

Another must have accessory is a stabilizer. Many bowhunters don’t use them because they believe their bow is quiet and shock free enough, but destroying bow shock isn’t the only thing stabilizers do. Professional archer Burley Hall uses an extremely long Doinker Stabilizer when he shoots in tournaments and a shorter version when bowhunting. A Doinker stabilizer has a weighted front end which destroys vibration, helps balance the bow and keeps the bow steady in the archers’ hand which results in tighter groups. If pro archers use stabilizers, shouldn’t all of us? Accuracy is most important to guys like Burley Hall. At archery tournaments, you won’t find an archer who shoots without a stabilizer on his bow because professional archers believe a stabilizer is worth it’s weight in gold.

HAND SHOCK

No one likes hand shock, but some archers like speed. The extremely fast bows typically have a little hand shock. If your bow falls into this category, there are a few things you can do to eliminate the hand shock. Eliminate the grip that is currently on the bow. Use an aftermarket grip. Many companies make aftermarket grips that are rubberized. They work great for bowhunters who want a grip that is thin, easy to grip, and eliminates vibration. Another option is wrapping your current grip in a rubberized material designed for bows. If you have a great bow that has a little more hand shock than you prefer either method will tame even the meanest bow.

The rest and the shelf of the bow are often the most overlooked areas of the bow. However, the rest and arrow shelf are often the two areas of the bow that cause hunters to go home empty handed more than any other. The sound of the arrow clanging against the arrow shelf or rest is all it takes for you to go home with a frown on your face, whether you are hunting deer or caribou. Solving this problem is fairly simple. Two dollars worth of mole skin turns any arrow rest and shelf into a silent but deadly weapon. Mole skin can be purchased in camo colors and comes with a sticky adhesive backing that makes applying it to any bow or rest a piece of cake.

TIGHTEN UP ADD-ON ITEMS

If you enjoy tinkering with bows, it might be a good idea before the season opens to make sure every nut, bolt, and screw is tight on your bow. If you don’t enjoy working on bows, you should bring it to a bow shop and have them give it a thorough inspection. Loose bolts and screws can make even the quietest bow noisy. I have heard more than one story of an unlucky hunter who had pins on his sight fall off when he was ready to shoot at a trophy buck. Quivers, sights, rests, and a variety of other accessories attached to your bow can become loose after thousands of shots. Paying attention to these little things can result in big dividends in the woods. Eliminating bow vibration can increase the longevity of the bow and the equipment that is attached to it.

Some hunters believe adding the little bells and whistles to a bow aren’t worth the time or the money. I think any item that can quiet my bow, help me shoot better, and increase my chances of scoring on a fidgety buck in the woods is worth every dime. The most successful hunters are often the ones who pay close attention to the little details. A couple of those details include eliminating bow noise and vibration.

Grand Theft Auto Iv(4) PS3 - Liberty City Has Never Looked so Good

A great social experiment gone wrong, that's how Rockstar describes their PS3 game "Grand Theft Auto 4" This game has evolved from the original PC version over the years and it's now ready to be launched a state of the art product where entire cities are simulated, this game is also available for Xbox 360. This game is actually rated 18+ so no youngsters should be allowed to play this game since there is a lot of violence, language and inappropriate situations; besides the ratings and restrictions those who are able to play it will definitively enjoy the great deal of detail the guys at Rockstar North put on this game.

Liberty City is a fictitious multi-cultural American city where all the action takes place. Then main character Niko (player) comes to America after being invited by his cousin Roman in order to find wealth and improve his life style, in other words he comes to live the American dream, however things turn out quite bad when he gets in debt and its dragged into the criminal underworld. Life can be quite miserable when you owe bad people something and the entire city worships money and status, this is the whole scenario Niko Bellic (the player) will have to face. Also, you might find some similarities among Liberty City and New York City as well as New Jersey.

Grand Theft Auto is known for its great deal of violence and shall we say "action" but this time around the guys at Rockstar are being congratulated for the incredible work done by the graphics team. Liberty City has been created and rendered with amazing precision and detail, so much so that it is said that everything to the last pothole and rooftop vent was carefully designed.

Among the many likable characters you will find in GTA 4 we have to mention:

Phill Bell: An Italian business man who works for the big guys in Liberty City and "takes care" of the small fries who give problems or don't pay their dues on time.

Roman Bellic: This is Niko's cousin who is very ambitious and wants to "earn some money" and make a name for himself in Liberty City. He likes alcohol, women and works in his car shop business which he refers to as "Roman Bellic enterprises"

Vlad Glebov: Amusing Russian mafioso.

Many Escuela: This guy adds some latin spice to the game, he is better known by is accent and the reggaeton music which always accompanies his rampages.

Words simply can't describe what you will have to do in Liberty City, this game is sure to keep you hooked for hours because of it's amazing graphics and yes, all the "things that go down in this place" (slang).

Does Your Plot Suit Your Characters and Vice-versa?

Creative Writing Tips –

When an idea comes to us for a short story, we either think of a story line first or a character first. Whichever we think of first, and later on build, we have to make sure the plot and the character suit each other.

Example one – We think of a story line first.

Your story is set in a rural area. A company opens a factory and employs workers from that small town. The residents welcome this, as there aren’t many jobs going around. The management takes advantage of that fact and exploit the workers.

Using a technicality in the system, perhaps listing them under different job titles in their books, they pay them less than they are entitled. Your main character sees this injustice and leads the workers to rebel against the management.

Now in a plot like this you will need your main character to posses certain qualities. Like…

Leadership

To be able to lead the people to rebel.

Convincing

The workers are from a rural area. Some might be uneducated and not aware of their rights. The main character has to convince them that what the management is doing, is wrong.

Persuader

Living in a rural area, jobs are hard to find. Most of the workers will view the company as their savior. Their thinking will be that receiving little money is better than none at all. The main character has to persuade them that being in a rural area the company needs them as much as the workers need the company.

Strong Personality & Confident

We need a strong character that will see things through to the end. We don’t want someone giving up when things get tough. He will also need to be confident that he is doing the right thing (not to make things worse for the workers) and believes in himself (knowing what he’s doing is right).

Strong people skills

To be able to speak and relate to people on all levels.

Negotiator

To negotiate a solution with management and workers.

Public speaker skills

To be able to address this mass group of workers, in a voice that is confident, persuading, authoritative etc.

So these are the qualities we will need our character to have.

Now let’s see if we can make him believable. Remember he lives in the same rural area, so what makes him different from the rest of the workers who are willing to settle for less?

I could say he recently move to that rural area from the city. He used to work as a union leader and wanted to get out of the rat race. But having fought for workers rights his entire career, he can’t stand now to see injustices and comes to the decision to fight for them and himself.

So this character would suit our plot because we need someone like him for our story.

Example two – Thinking of a character first

We notice a man on the street. Something about him triggers our interest so we decide to write about him in a short story. So at this point we will build the character first and then work a story around him.

Let’s go back to where we saw him…

He’s walking briskly along a busy street. He’s in a hurry. He’s dressed in a three-piece suit, which indicates he might be a businessman. He’s got a stack of documents under his arm; a briefcase in his left hand and his right hand is occupied by holding the phone to his ear, which he’s shouting into.

Let’s observe him closer…

He’s in his mid thirties. He looks authoritative. Perhaps he has his own business. Why is he shouting into the phone? Perhaps one of his employees made a mistake, which has cost the character a lot of money.

What if this employee made the mistake on purpose? What if he’s secretly working for the opposition, planted to destroy the main character’s company? What if the owner of that opposing company is the main character’s own brother? Etc…

So as we analyze this character and ask questions about him, our plot begins to unfold.

Nightdancers' Montana Crossings: Flute Music of Transformation

Whether it has to do with the philosophy of better living through habit, thought or magical action, things that are associated with "New Age" are theoretically supposed to have some basis in spirituality. Yet much of this spiritually is lightly rooted in the shallows of corporate productivity techniques or power-of-positive-thinking type truisms with some pseudo eastern promises for dressing.

Then there is the New Age philosophy that harkens back to something ancient, even primordial. This is especially visible in the music. So much of what is called New Age music is made from artificial ingredients, from canned sounds created by synthesizers tuned and programmed for maximum vapidity; and voices, always the voices, high and breathy with a thin, grating tone that someone somewhere decided signified the celestial. But there are musicians who create spiritual and contemplative music based in the traditions and sounds of antiquity, from nations and cultures with long shadows such as Africa, China, Japan and India.

Riding on this track is the group NightDancers, a duo consisting of flautists Gera Clark and John Sarantos, who perform original songs based on the folkloric styles of several Native American tribes. The music on their CD Montana Crossings is both ethereal and earthy, reflecting the unitary, all-is-one world view common to Native American cosmology. The songs are mostly built on simple three to seven note motifs that go through different permutations. The flutes - NightDancers plays twenty-five different kinds of these wooden, handcrafted instruments - blend together and dance, their music resonating in what sounds like a valley high up in the mountains or a cathedral (kudos to engineer Jim Anderson of AVATAR Studios in NYC). The effect of the music is meditative and dreamy. The music itself is never static or boring; in fact its intricacies reveal themselves with repeated listening. The titles evoke, perhaps invoke, aspects of the natural and supernatural worlds, which many indigenous tribes say are one and the same.

The song titles and how the pieces are composed and arranged reflect this thinking. Musically these pieces evoke the objects and ideas behind the titles as well. The opening track "Spirit Winds" starts with soft, breathy tones that rise from silence in unison. Then one flute states a simple theme that is answered by a counter melody from the other flute; they go back and forth, each musical voice getting time and space alone while connecting with the other. The title track starts with bursts of fluttery, echoing sounds, followed by a long-toned plaintive melody calling to mind Montana’s terrain of mountains and wide-open plains. One characteristic element of all the songs is how the flutes will hit consonant harmonies that ring out dramatically, and dissonant unison lines that buzz gently yet also sooth in an odd sort of way.

On "Butterfly Dance" the flutes play lines that gently glide like the butterfly itself, answering and echoing each other in way that suggests the "round" form found in European folk and classical music. On "Turtle and Bird," NightDancers take evocation literally. One flute moves in long-toned, deliberately paced turtle lines while the other play’s light riffs that flit and hop like our aviary brethren would. As the piece continues, the unitary theme comes through as the two flutes move together, conversing in similar voices that stills maintain their original animal character. "Elk Medicine" is a gentle wail of pleading and prayer and is one of the strongest tracks on the record. It is also an example of healing music. The opening cry is answered by melodies that create a sense of quietude and peace. And healing.

Ms. Clark and Mr. Sarantos take the healing aspects of their music literally. Clark, a RN, has been teaching people how to play the flute for meditation and stress relief. She also started New York City's Miracle House Flute Circle where she works with cancer patients using music for healing. Sarantos teaches flute workshops all over the country.

Montana Crossings creates music that is relaxing and interesting, that can be played either as background or as an immediately engaging listen.
