Love it! | | Review Date: December 6, 2009 | | Reviewer: S. Li, USA | | Honestly, one of the best looking mmos I've seen as well as one of the most customizable in terms of character, skills, and gear. I've read about a half dozen reviews on this game, most criticizing it for being a "grinder" but after playing for about a week (level 21 as of now) I've yet to experience what these critics have deemed a "grinder". I've only redone about 2 or 3 quests and those were hardly done for the sake of earning experience but mere curiosity as to what kind of rewards could be obtained with the tokens (Iron, Bronze, etc.) earned. Perhaps the grinding aspect was corrected in a recent patch? The wings are... kind of overrated, I prefer the mounted flight in WoW, but then again WoW doesn't have flying combat like Aion does and for that, I applaud the creators of Aion. The bots however ARE a problem that I recognize from previous complaints and NCSoft seems to be working on that issue (they recently banned the accounts of about 16,000 confirmed bots). For a game that can be bought for below $30 (got mine from here for $25, $28 with shipping) and that includes the first month free, it's totally worth it even if you decide not to subscribe for additional months. |
AION is Fantastic | | Review Date: January 26, 2010 | | Reviewer: Yooseok Hur, VA USA | What a gorgeous graphic! What a easy interface! But scenario was much weaker than WOW. If you love great visual, choose AION. If you are solo player and love scenario, this is not your game. |
Impressive MMO | | Review Date: December 9, 2009 | | Reviewer: L. Presgraves, Hampton Roads, VA | | As a WoW veteran, I wasn't sure I would like this game as I was tired of WoW style MMO. For me, WoW is a bit played out & I feel that the game developers are having to stretch to make the game interesting. I just lost interest. So, I decided to give this a go during Beta & I was delighted. Even though there are only 2 races to choose from, character customization is amazingly detailed. I made my 2nd character look just like me simply because I could. Once you log in, you can appreciate the work that was put into producing this game as it has the most beautiful graphics I've seen in any game. Leveling the character is pretty standard. Some quests offer cut scenes upon turn in which is a treat. Some of the scenes are rehashed in later quests, but it doesn't detract too much from the fun of it. The GM's where quick to fix log on problems & put bots / gold spammers in remission - The speed & efficiency was impressive' the attention NCSoft puts into managing the game offers great expectations for expansions. The grinding that many complain about is not all that bad. Repeatable quests are offered but not necessary. Even though I was never a big PVP style player, this game makes it alot of fun & I find myself deliberately wandering into enemy territory to pick a fight. There's not as much exploration area as WoW right now (but to be fair WoW has been out for years & implemented several expansions to increase there map areas) , but with the upcoming expansions there should be a lot more to explore. So as a gamer that thought I'd never play MMO's again after being burnt out from WoW, I am really impressed. |
a legitimate rival to WoW | | Review Date: May 3, 2010 | | Reviewer: E. Banach, USA | Though it's early in its history, this game does live up to most of the standards of the MMORPG, in my opinion. If you're still playing WoW or GW, and just looking for something different to see if those are worth quitting and starting something new, you may want to save your time and skip Aion. But if you've still got the craving for an mmo experience but it's just to painful to log on to that old level 80 or whatever, then Aion may be a breath of fresh air for you (it was for me). I have been playing for a week now and I am at level 23 with my new Cleric ( the only healing class in the game, other than Chanters). The first impressions were pretty good. As an former WoW player I felt pretty much at home as far as the interface goes. I actually like the action bars a little better because they are already set up with keybinds for you. The graphics are also a very big selling point here. Everything in this world just looks very nice. Due to this though you will need a pretty up to date computer to enjoy it. I am playing on a very new laptop and havent had any major technical concerns but it can get choppy. If you're still running a machine that got you through 5 years of WoW, you will definitely make sure you look over the system requirements for this game. The learning curve will be a little steep for new players however I did feel it is certainly not as user friendly as WoW. You will not be getting the instant gratification that WoW now offers, like lightspeed heirloom leveling and jumping into queued instances and battle grounds at level 15. Leveling in Aion will become a quite painfully slow process as you reach about level 20. Due to this fact, it really does reminds me of the early days of WoW, when leveling to 60 was an intensely long and tiring grind but altogether extremely rewarding. Though similar to WoW in a lot of ways you'll find that their approach to things like crafting items (alchemy, cooking, weaponsmithing, etc.) are quite different and interesting but definitely fun. You should also note that there are little to no pvp or instanced content until you get to level 30 or so. You will spend a good chunk of the grind to 50 doing TONS of quests and killing millions of monsters solo unless you have friends who play. Grouping is a lot of fun and there is a lot of role-play potential for this game. Since UO i've been playing these mmo to death so I'm kind of leaning towards 3 out of 5 stars for the degree of fun. These games are cool but they do require a lot of your time and will keep you from doing things outside. If you want to get into that kind of thing again or for the first time, try this game out because it's a very respectable game in my opinion. The makers of this game have designed some very beautiful landscapes and very cool character designs. If it had come out the same time WoW did I'm sure there would be half as many of these negative reviews on here because a lot of these people seem like their still trapped in the nostalgia and love for world of Warcraft. |
The most beautiful MMO on the market. | | Review Date: December 8, 2009 | | Reviewer: Sean Orlikowski, | Not enough can be said of Aion's stunning visuals. A full-blown celestial fantasy world where divine beings wage a constant war for supremacy. Aion is a traditional MMO with levels, classes, and thousands of other players on each server, but really stands out from your typical and generic (and ugly) MMOs such as LOTRO, WAR, and WoW. Aion brings a level of beauty to the MMO world not seen before and is just as engaging in every other aspect as previous MMOs. If you're looking for a gift for the holiday or just a new game to try, Aion has a solid foundation already and has much, much more planned for 2010. |
